Violinist and educator
Cathy Scott-Burt MA DipTCL LTCL PGCE is a violinist, violist, examiner, conductor, academic and music educator who loves performing and teaching.
She studied with violinist Sophie Langdon at Trinity College of Music, joining the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra after graduating. Whilst with CBSO, Cathy wrote and presented CBSO concerts for children, performed chamber music in the 'Centre Stage' concert series and sat on the board as a player-representative.
She has performed with many major UK orchestras, and now combines freelance performance with teaching, tutoring, examining and coaching and conducting string ensembles.
After CBSO, Cathy went into academic teaching and is an experienced teacher and examiner of GCSE and A level music and of music theory.
Cathy has over 25 years experience of string teaching; her pupils have joined the National Children's Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, National Youth String Orchestra and have had success at all levels from beginner ABRSM Prep Test to level 4 diplomas. Her students have gone on to study music at university, performance courses at music conservatoires and for 6th form studies at specialist music school. Cathy's MA in Music Education from TrinityLaban led her to speak at conferences and symposiums about her research into the British Youth Orchestra; she is now a member of the International Youth Orchestra Bridges organisation. She has taught individual violin and viola lessons to children and adults, run whole-class music service string schemes, coached chamber music and directed the String Orchestra at Primary Royal Academy of Music, presented children's concerts and workshops and taught music theory throughout her career.
Cathy is based in Rugby UK, and believes passionately that good music education should be available to all young people; she works for Coventry Music Hub alongside her private studio teaching. Cathy is also an Arts Award advisor at all levels.
